The Barr Management Group was started in 2017 with the intent to help organizations (large or small) to become more efficient in all facets of their work. One of the main themes in doing this work is to change the perception of a “typical” consultant. Where most consultants have a model that they try and fit everyone into, Barr Management Group starts with a blank page every time.

Every company and person is different and unique with its own set of circumstances and challenges. Barr Management Group’s objective is not to see how similar a group of companies are and try to cross-pollinate ideas (best practices or not), but their objective is to understand how and why companies are different and work with them using expertise gained through years of experience to help those companies achieve their goals.

Greg Barr is the founder and owner of Barr Management Group. His favorite question is “why?” This sole question has served him well in both his studies and his career. Since a young boy Greg has always been trying to figure out how things work. Whether it was tearing apart his parents’ old tube TV or asking questions (maybe one too many) to figure out how his parents came to a decision, he has always tried to understand the entire issue and then offer suggestions on how to improve. This inquisitive nature served him well through both his bachelors and masters in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan.

After graduation Greg joined General Motors and worked in a variety of roles from operations to design to marketing and sales. His time with General Motors allowed him to work both domestically and internationally. Although Greg was gaining invaluable experience with GM, he decided to make a change and join a small consulting company in Boston.

Greg’s experience in Boston was life altering for a variety of reasons. Career-wise it was the first opportunity that he had to see how a smaller organization worked with very little bureaucracy and added responsibility. However, also career-wise, Greg’s wife Jessica had begun studies at Boston University for her Endodontic residency. As Jessica began practicing, Greg began managing the finances in his spare time. This opened the door for him and Jessica to grow together in the dental field. As Jessica finished her residency and began her career in Endodontics, and as Greg grew in his career outside of the dental community, they were able to grow the practice and use a variety of methods for managing the office that Greg had learned in other industries. This provided Jessica’s practice with a unique ability to become more efficient using methods not yet introduced to the dental field.

After Boston, Greg and Jessica moved to Asheville, NC. As Jessica’s practice continued to grow, Greg continued in his career progression. After working for a mid-size company who designed and built brakes systems for trains and subways, Wabtec located in South Carolina, he then started to work for Eaton Corporation. In working there for 11 years, Greg progressed through a variety of roles from working as an individual contributor to managing a group of 300 people for a $200 million product line. Regardless of the job or industry, Greg continued to ask “why?” “why are we doing it that way?” or “why do we need that tool?” Regardless of the answer, it makes everyone on board reassess what they are doing and can it be done a better way, which is at the heart of Barr Management Group’s mission.

Career aspirations and accomplishments are one thing, but what is the point of it all? For Greg, it comes down to one thing – family. Greg is married to his longtime friend and sweetheart, Jessica. After meeting in elementary school and being friends, then dating, they were married in 2000. In 2010, the best things happened to Jessica and Greg, they were blessed with twins, Emily and Jacob. Now the family of four enjoy doing as much as they can together, whether watching the kids play sports, hiking, or having movie night, time spent together is the best time. For Greg, FAMILY is the answer to “why?”.
